BACKROADS ORIGINAL | Moving Mountains

Tre'lan grew up in Oklahoma with his Mom and Stepfather, who sold drugs and was eventually arrested and sent to federal prison, leaving Tre'lan to be the man of the house and look after his two young sisters. By high school, Tre'lan was on a fast track to the same fate. By 18, he was arrested on drug charges and facing 5 years in prison. Using all the money he'd saved up from hustling, he hired the best lawyer in town and got his sentence lowered to 5 years probation. Knowing he would never truly change his life by staying in the same environment, Tre'lan skipped out on probation and left Oklahoma to go as far away as he could get, landing him on a remote island in Hawai'i, where he didn’t know a single person. This is where he dove deep into the questions he never had the space or safety to explore before- unpacking his traumas by building a connection with nature. This is where he found the ocean, where he found big wave surfing, and where he found himself.

Moving Mountains is an honest and intimate exploration of one young man’s journey into the great outdoors.

It beautifully showcases how his exploration outside is allowing him to finally do the work of exploring the deepest, darkest depths of the things he holds inside; as he seeks healing from trauma and daily, complex struggles with depression and CPTSD. For Tre’lan, big wave surfing became the vehicle for this work.
